It was so sudden. He woke up with a flash, bright lights, soft sounds, a bed, he was alive?? But he'd died in the chamber...in engineering. Spock and he had exchanged that vulcan hand-thing whatever the hell it was. He'd died, he was dead. Was this heaven? Holy....

No. Bones was here nagging at him.

"Oh don't be so melodramatic, you were barely dead. You've been out cold for two weeks."

He was so...taken aback. What had happened? He just remembered being in the locked chamber watching Spock shed tears, glimmering tears of anguish as he slowly died of radiation poisoning... his heart lurched at the memory. He didn't know the vulcan was even capable...

And then Spock was in the room, approaching him. Suddenly... everything else was forgotten. Hell even Bones was gone in his mind, though he could hear the doctor put in a "You know Uhura and I had something to do with it too."

"....Thanks, Spock... for saving my life..."

Okay is a relative term Jim...
[Spock closed his eyes... now was not the time to be so 'Vulcan' with his intended. He looked over at Jim with apology in his eyes.]

I am... fine. You are here after all.
[A very small smile... and then Spock was out of the car... lifting his hand in a Ta'al.]

Greetings...
[The stranger Vulcan inclined his head, and gestured inside the building.]

S'chn T'gai Spock 'cha Sarek...you are expected, please follow me.

<sub>[He gathered that this wasn't an easy time for Spock... he seemed uncomfortable. Did he and his dad have issues? It would make sense... he'd just be a polite wall flower and stay out of trouble. Mm'k? Wait... what did he call Spock?

They were led inside the building, simply decorated but nonetheless gorgeous. Clearly played down as much as possible, the building was a palace. Floor to cieling windows, marble and ivory floors, columns, polished mirrors and framed works of vulcan art and various photographs from historic events between Vulcan and Earth that happened through this very embassy. Jim felt the gravity of the place and almost at once felt his love's desire to be gone from the place.

But they were brought back to an office past double doors. It was large, simply furnished but again... luxurious as hell. The man at the desk didn't look up but Jim knew him already. Ambassador Sarek.]</sub>

Ambassador...

Send them in, that is all. _{[Sarek was writing something, didn't look up. The assistant left at that, leaving the two men in the office with the vulcan. In thirty three seconds his pen was put down and he assessed the two men.]}



... Have a seat. _{[he gestured to the plush chairs before his desk]} It is fortuitous you were able to come so soon.

_{[No thanks or 'hi son' or anything. Jim said nothing, just did as he was told.]}

[This is what being a Vulcan was... now can you see how 'different' Spock is around you Jim?
Spock inclined his head at his father's offer, and sat down. There was no emotions playing on his face... nothing in his eyes as he regarded the man behind the desk.

Of course it was always awkward to face the one who had kicked you out of the family for following your dreams... Yeah.

But, Spock wasn't about to beat around the bush, and small-talk was illogical. Since Sarek was the one that had called them here... he would wait for his father to speak.

He could only hope that Jim understood what was happening... this wasn't a slight to him, merely Vulcan ways.]

_{[He really loves you, son. Honest. Underneath all the not-having-feelings. He didn't have time to waste, being the voice of a very needy and very vulnerable planet. He'd cleared his schedule for this boys... not that you'd ever be told that. Anyway...]}

Captain Kirk... I am aware you and Spock are engaged in a romantic partnership.



_{[Jim nodded, sitting up straight and he was obedient! See Spock? He could when he had to...]}

I am aware my son considers you his T'hy'la. Do you understand the magnitude of that term?

You do not. _{[Jim blinked, not sure if he should be offended but Sarek was busy continuing so he just listened.]} You have not been exposed to it in the traditional fashion. _{[though a meld...]}



Which is to your benefit. I called for you to impress upon you both the risks of a bond between a vulcan and a human. This is a unique experience that... now only I... can communicate to you.

_{[Just for a second, no, half of a second... his eyes looked sad. Oh Amanda...]}

[Spock tilted his head curiously...
Father had changed since the death of his mother... Sarek's mate. If Sarek was offering assistance, it was only logical to accept.]

Indeed? I was unaware of any serious risks... I had believed that you..

...that you and mother were successful and unharmed. [Spock was mildly ashamed for the trip-up, but he collected himself.
Also, what were these risks? Why hadn't he heard anything until now? Wasn't this relevant information that should have been given to him long ago?

_{[He looked to Spock as he commented, face showing nothing, not even judgment.]}

We were ultimately successful and unharmed, Spock. _{[He considered Jim, who in turn was inwardly squirming. Why was the ambassador looking at him like a lab specimen?][He took a long hard look at Jim then and the captain again was trying hard not to squirm and instead look stoic. He managed to stay professional but... this man's gaze was unnerving. It was like the fleet admiral... times eighty.]}



The human brain did not evolve telepathic or otherwise psychic abilities. Yet it is remarkable in that it can support those abilities in the presence of another psychic mind acting as an anchor. This causes little issue when a simple short mind meld is conducted between a vulcan mind and that of another species. However the permanency of a bond places great stress on the non-psychic party. The human brain must adapt to survive a vulcan bond... and it has shown to adapt at remarkable speeds to accommodate a new ability such as the telepathy introduced into a bond.

_{[Jim nodded, following. Sarek raised a slight eyebrow at that. He knew you were listening, human. No need to visually underline it. Nevertheless...]}

However this transition takes time and the effects of a mating bond on an unprepared human brain are devastating. <sub>[He remembered his wife, curled up in bed mentally exhausted, struggling to finish a simple report or even a sentence.]

[Jim took Sarek's moment of silence as a cue he could speak.]</sub>



...Well they obviously weren't impossible... your wife managed to overcome them. _{[He had a faint smile on his lips. See? Hope! He'd be fine!... except his smile almost instantly evaporated under Sarek's unimpressed facade.]}



My late wife was submitted to every psychologist and neurologist we had at our disposal after we were bonded. Her symptoms made her daily life impossible. Her short term memory, logical reasoning, ability to maintain focus, perform menial calculations, and comprehend both written and spoken language were deeply impaired.

But she got through it... _{[Jim sounded as if he was trying to convince Sarek who merely continued as though Jim hadn't said anything.]}

Various tests showed Amanda's mind was under substantial stress. Her mind, unequipped with an outlet for telepathic exchange was forced to develop one under much duress. The strain of our existing bond was inciting this reaction but in turn her mind had very little energy to devote to anything beyond involuntary bodily functions._{[he remembered how he regretted bonding with her, feeling as though he had taken a crystal, perfect and unique in it's complexity... and crushed it between his hands.]}

How did she get over it? _{[Jim found some confidence, knowing this story had a happy ending]}

I was prepared to end the bond for her mental well being... it was only at her insistence... that I hesitated in that action. _{[She had demanded through their bond that he give her time. She refused any notion that they part, and Sarek would never admit that he was looking for any excuse to stay bonded to her.]} In time she grew stronger, her mental stamina slowly overcame the immense demands of our bond and she was able to resume her normal duties.



So... it was a happy ending. <sub>[Jim managed a tiny smile. See? No biggie. It would be hard, but they'd make it.]

[Sarek seemed as though he wasn't finished.]</sub>

It took my wife nearly one terran year to come to such a point. Her mind was stronger than it had ever been previously but I admit her development during that time was a great cause for concern. She wasn't expected to complete the developmental stages necessary to host her half of our bond. If you and my son indeed are T'hy'la than it is likely that your symptoms will be exaggerated compared to those Spock's mother exhibited, James Kirk... T'hy'la bonds that were documented on our homeworld were described as exponentially more powerful than the typical bonds between intended mates. Even so, Spock's mind is developed to accommodate that. Any hardship regarding the intensity of the bond will be easily overcome.

You think I won't be able to work my way up to handling this? Is there something I can do? Some kind of exercise?



I had considered that as well when my wife was enduring her... transition. I found that nothing could strengthen her mind from the outside... When... a mind meld is conducted, the physical connection of one's hand to the psy points of another's mind works as a psychic anchor. _{[Spock already knows this, it's just schooling for you, Jim.]} That allows a meld between vulcans and non-telepaths to conclude successfully, the entire psychic burden is taken on by the telepathic party. I was able to relieve my wife's symptoms if only temporarily in this manner.

As long as you were touching you didn't have problems...

Yes. But it did nothing to aid increasing her telepathic acuity.

Well it gave her a break, that had to help, right?

She offered mixed responses on its effects. However, my point is to impress that the nature of a bond is hosing a telepathic connection without the aid of physical touch. T'hy'la bonds demand much more telepathic stamina. It may be possible that you are unable to sustain such a bond for any length of time even with Spock's help. It is also possible... in the worst possible outcome, that the exponential power of the T'hy'la bond simply demands more mental capacity than a human brain can give...

_{[Meaning maybe t'hy'la bonds are for vulcans and not humans though he does look a bit sad to say that...]}



You mean it would... kill me? _{[If the bond took more energy than he had and he couldn't power his own body, he didn't have the brain power to make himself breath, or bet his heart, or stay out of a coma...]}

In the worst possible scenario.

But if we're destined... and that's what that word means, Spock told me. If we're meant for each other then wouldn't I be able to handle it? Shouldn't I be?



Perhaps... there has only been one other case for you to consider. This story is not intended to inspire paranoia. I mean to inform you of what you are about to embark on...

[Spock didn't move... didn't make a sound as his father and Jim conversed. The Vulcan took in every piece of information and decided that he absolutely did not like the risks involved.

This could kill Jim.

Spock's mind was on overdrive as he though of every possible scenario, every argument he could put forward to make Jim think that bonding was a bad idea and should therefore forego it.
Spock had long ago decided that he would live with Jim in any capacity... if that mean no mental bond, so be it.

However, this was not something he could decide on his own, he knew this... Jim had the decision in the end. But... Spock could always refuse...

...no, he couldn't. It was illogical to lie to one's self. The Vulcan nearly sighed out loud as he became aware of the 'rock and hard place' he was stuck between. No matter what, this was going to be bad for Jim. He loved Jim... and the thought of him being hurt was absolutely repulsive... And ultimately, to think that he, Spock, was the one hurting Jim was...
...abhorrent... On the other hand, to refuse Jim this bond would be hurting him as well.

Spock came out of his thoughts as his father turned to him...]

I admit that knowledge of the possible risks in bonding with Jim makes me....

...hesitate. However, as repulsive as hurting Jim might be...I cannot make the decision for both of us.
[Spock looks over to his T'hy'la...]

I cannot promise to keep you safe Ashaya... it is you that must make this decision for both of us. However, I will remind you... that no matter what you decide I will be here...
...no matter the capacity.

<sub>[Sarek was quiet as his son addressed his intended. Indeed the use of an ancient term of endearment was all the ambassador needed to hear. He understood the level of devotion Spock possessed for James Kirk... and he could sympathize, whether Spock knew that or not.



Jim looked Spock in the eye, listening...he paused, looking to Sarek.]</sub>

May I ask something about your wife?

_{[The ambassador paused but nodded]}



After all she went through to maintain the bond... did she ever say if she thought it was worth it?



_{[Sarek seemed to think deeply at this, perhaps another memory of his wife sprang forward... but he spoke calmly]}

She had no regrets about it. In fact she confessed to me later in our marriage that she believed leaving the bond would have been her biggest regret.



..._{[Jim nodded]} Thank you... I think that's all I can do now. _{[He looked to Spock]} You and I both need to really think about this...

Sarek seemed to concur, nodding once and standing from his seat.]</sub>

I believe that is the wisest course of action... Will you inform me of the final decision?

_{[Oh estranged son who he really did love deep down. His only piece of Amanda left...]}

[Spock inclines his head... then stands, addressing his father once more.]

Father, I thank thee for the time you have set aside for us today... your guidance is much appreciated.

[Spock lifts his hand in a Ta'al...but hesitates... and drops his hand.]

Father... may I request to speak to you in private?
[Spock turns to Jim... his eyes asking everything in one look. He needs only a moment.]

This... should not take long. Will you wait for me?

Sure. I'll be right outside. <sub>[looking at the artwork and the photos arranged in the gallery...

Meanwhile, Sarek waited for the human in the party to exit the room before addressing his son once more.]</sub>

[Spock watches as Jim leaves... then sits back down, looking at his father.]

Father... I am compelled to ask about your well being.
[Spock shifts in his seat, unsure of how to ask...]

It has been... difficult. However, I have found that being with those who are considered to be 'family' makes the... absence less so.

[Indeed, being surrounded by those he considers friends... his family on the Enterprise has helped a lot. But wasn't having friends illogical? Negative... he could not deny it now.]

Father... it is my hope that from now on... we can be an emotional support to one another.
[Spock was basically asking Sarek to be apart of his life again... and be like his family on the Enterprise. And now that Spock was on the brink of starting his own family, he wanted Sarek to be very much apart of it.]

_{[Truth was something Sarek could always appreciate even if it was in a subject he didn't wish to dabble in. He took Spock's news with grace, meaning he didn't react visibly. But he did take his son's words to... not to heart, but to mind. Amanda did leave her wisdom in him, this precious child they created who was her lasting legacy. He had only seen the beginnings of her hopes for Spock when he left for Starfleet and saved their elders... he was learning from his own child same as Amanda had hoped all of Vulcan and Earth would. It was a deeply moving thing he could not yet articulate... and he'd keep it to himself for now.]}

I believe your mother would be pleased... if she were here now...

[Spock holds eye contact with his father for a long moment... and when he finds what he is looking for he stands.
Inclining his head, the younger Vulcan lifts his hand in a traditional Ta'al.]

Once again, he hesitated... stopping at the door, he turned and looked back on the older Vulcan, alone in his grand office.]

[With that last pronouncement, he left the office...
It didn't take long to find Jim. It was as if he had a homing signal on his T'hy'la...]

Jim... are you prepared to leave? Shall we stop at the Vulcan grocer?

<sub>[Sarek had no other response than a formal vulcan farewell. However his son was brilliantly targeting his main problem. After the loss of his wife he had lost a social outlet he had come to depend on. Traditional vulcans didn't require such a thing and he was isolated in his loneliness. Unable to name his pain while being forced to conceal it to remain astute in his profession. His one comfort.

He may reach out to his son rather soon...

And Jim wasn't exactly hiding but he had wandered out of view behind a large pillar, looking at the various photos hanging from it on all sides.]</sub>



Hm? Yeah, I'm ready. And absolutely. I'm cooking plomeeks today, that's the whole plan. _{[he smiled]}

[Spock gave Jim a small smile.... then quickly looked around.
Seeming to find the coast clear, he pushed Jim back in behind the pillar and gave him a small, chaste kiss.]

He held Spock's shoulders and kissed him harder, licking along his lips. Just... just a tiny bit more, ok? A wee bit more sugar than that cheap little peck you gave him. Don't push him against anything unless you meant business.]</sub>

[Spock was taken by slight surprise...well...
...perhaps this was behaviour he should be expecting by now. No matter, Spock wasn't complaining or anything. Actually, quite the contrary. The Vulcan had fallen into the kiss, opening his mouth in surrender to his love.... and deepening it by wrapping his strong, Vulcan arms around Jim's waist.

For a moment, Spock forgot he was at the Embassy... a public space...with his father just down the hall.
Jim, you've ruined a Vulcan, I hope you're happy. heh]

<sub>[He's elated. But to focus on the subject at hand, He slid his hands down Spock's back, fitting his hands into the vulcan's back pockets. He pulled away, licking his lips, then leaned in for Spock's neck.

He kissed his skin hotly, moving up his jaw as he crawled over Spock on their bed. They'd rushed to the grocer and home, the plomeeks were unattended on the table as they'd rushed to their room. Spock had lit a fire at the embassy and nothing else could get done until it had at least flared.

Jim's hands pushed down into Spock's pants, tearing the clothing away, then his shirt, underwear, everything.]</sub>

[Spock groaned as the sensations once more overwhelmed him... The trip to the grocer had been a blur, his focus completely on the man he had the honour to call T'hy'la.
The heat of the Vulcan desert did not compare to the heat that flared in Spock for his intended... The Vulcan growled in frustration as Jim's clothing decided to give him a difficult time... a tearing sound filled the room as Spock forcefully removed Jim's shirt, then moved on to his pants.

Soon, blessedly delicious skin stretched over his own... and Spock purred in contentment as ran his hands down Jim's chest.]
