It was so sudden. He woke up with a flash, bright lights, soft sounds, a bed, he was alive?? But he'd died in the chamber...in engineering. Spock and he had exchanged that vulcan hand-thing whatever the hell it was. He'd died, he was dead. Was this heaven? Holy....
No. Bones was here nagging at him.
"Oh don't be so melodramatic, you were barely dead. You've been out cold for two weeks."
He was so...taken aback. What had happened? He just remembered being in the locked chamber watching Spock shed tears, glimmering tears of anguish as he slowly died of radiation poisoning... his heart lurched at the memory. He didn't know the vulcan was even capable...
And then Spock was in the room, approaching him. Suddenly... everything else was forgotten. Hell even Bones was gone in his mind, though he could hear the doctor put in a "You know Uhura and I had something to do with it too."
"....Thanks, Spock... for saving my life..."

Date: 2013-08-07 06:56 pm (UTC)I'm glad to hear that.
[She breathed a genuine sigh of relief. As long as Spock was alright, then she could be comfortable. And Spock's web of helpful humans was growing. This was wonderful news. And she understood the implication that Spock wasn't fine before Jim was stable... it still turned the knife in her gut to hear him talk like that. He was so attached to Jim's every quirk and nuance... But she had to forget that, she was only here for Spock.]
Why wouldn't I call?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 07:02 pm (UTC)[Spock didn't really know how to word it. Maybe he thought it was wishful thinking that Nyota would actually one day see him as a friend.]
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 07:06 pm (UTC)I... only waited to give you time honestly.
And for my own dignity, really.
[It wouldn't do for her to just latch on to him immediately. Yes her heart was hurting but that was something that Spock strangely fixed. He was the medicine to the ailment he caused. She inwardly cringed knowing she was being a clingy undignified doormat but she'd still help him any way she knew how.]
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 07:09 pm (UTC)When there is a more opportune time, I would very much like for all of us to get together.
[Spock never wanted to lose her as a friend... and he was quite glad that he didn't.]
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 07:14 pm (UTC)... thanks Spock.
[Dammit her voice was too warm. She couldn't sound like she still loved him. Was that a sob in her voice she was choking back? Oh...shit.]
Do you know anything about when Jim might get discharged? When did this happen?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 07:17 pm (UTC)Also, Jim and I have been invited to stay on the Kirk farm for the time being... I believe it is a wise choice. That being said, we will not be returning to San Francisco for quite some time.
...Jim will need extra time to recover.
[Spock hesitated for a moment. Should he tell her that he and Jim were now bonded? Would that be callous considering that he and Nyota only called it off a week ago?]
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 07:24 pm (UTC)[That would be very callous and it would test her broken heart in a very negative way, Spock, how perceptive of you you braying ass. Continuing on.]
Just an hour? [Well Spock hadn't stopped her from talking to him... but wasn't it kind of a bad time?]
Should I tell the others what happened? I can be the liaison between you and the crew if need be. You must have your hands full there.
...Can I ask more about how this happened?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 07:44 pm (UTC)[Spock hesitated once more... He was tired, and he didn't really want to talk about it anymore. Winona had...
..drained him. But did he owe it to Nyota? Perhaps...
On the other hand...]
Perhaps another time Nyota. I must return to Jim at this time...
Thank you for calling.
[He truly was thankful... but he was still on edge. He needed time.]
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 07:49 pm (UTC)I understand. Call me if you need to, alright?
Tell Jim I'm thinking about him.
[Once the call was over Winona returned with not only a chair but a bit of food from the downstairs cafe. A thermos full of coffee for herself, a similar one with tea for Spock, and a small salad for either of them.]
Here. Sit down you look about ready to drop. [She sat, making herself comfortable on "her" side of Jim's bed.]
I suppose this misadventure will be more about you and I getting to know one another than anything to do with Jim here...
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 07:56 pm (UTC)Indeed?
[Really? Well... he supposed that was true. They had learned an awful lot about each other in such a short amount of time. It was rather curious in fact, this relationship that they were building. It was if they were continually on guard around each other, and yet, completely comfortable in a very strange way.
It was... fascinating.
Spock makes a small noncommittal noise.]
If you have any further questions, I suppose that now is a good time to do so.
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 08:01 pm (UTC)[She isn't ready to emotionally invest in someone but she's getting to know him. It's difficult, nigh on impossible for a human to invest intellectually and not emotionally in another being. Even Winona can't do it completely but she can almost nearly know Spock's facts and not blink twice were something terrible to happen to him. It wasn't anything against him, she simply did this as a means to protect herself from the agony of losing another loved one.]
You can ask me things too if you like...
Well... what are you like? What do you like to do in your spare time?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 08:09 pm (UTC)I have always found the term 'like' to be incredibly unhelpful. It is a word that means too much and yet nothing at all.
[Spock talks about it like it's an inside joke... his eyes twinkling..]
If you are referring to my passions and what it is I do for enjoyment... I ask that you maintain the image that I am a Vulcan. Vulcans do not have 'fun' in the same sense that humans do. I enjoy research, exploration, discovery....
....and on quiet evenings I enjoy chess and music.
What of yourself Missus Kirk? What are your passions?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 08:17 pm (UTC)...touche.
And point made. I suppose that was stupid to ask.
Do you consider yourself human at all?
Me. Right... I used to do a lot of things. I surfed, raced cars, drank too much. Then I had children. I ride horses, cook, and collect vintage items from the era George and I preferred. I play chess and swim and run most mornings though lately I've been negligent.
What kid of music do you like?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 08:29 pm (UTC)...she sounded exactly like Jim.
Most curious.
Oh... human? Spock considers that for a moment.]
It is interesting how certain events can change your perspective on certain things. If you had asked me the same question before my mother died, I would have said no...and would have taken insult to the question. to be human is to be weak and emotional. And while Vulcans would never admit to thinking like that... it is nevertheless true.
On the other hand, I cannot deny the half that is human... to do so is illogical.
Since my mother's death I have been attempting to connect with the half of me that is all I have left of her. To say that I am human now would not give her justice.
A rather interesting perspective change, yes?
[Spock is silent for a moment...as if remembering something.]
As a youth I learned how to play the Vulcan lyre... a string instrument much like Earth's guitar or cello. I had learned to enjoy the music it produces... however my mother was always fond of Earth music, and played it often while my father was away on business.
To an extent I have an appreciation for most all music... I do not think I can pick a favourite.
Jim though... he sang once. If I was only to be able to listen to one type of music for the rest of my life, it would be his voice.
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 08:50 pm (UTC)[Well that's genetics and familiarity from upbringing for you, Spock.
Indeed interesting... You were a typical child who denied anything he felt defensive of. A sign of youth.]
Are you happier at all with this perspective?
You play an instrument? That's wonderful. You ought to have Jim sing along sometime. He loves to sing... a teacher of his wanted him to pursue that for a career and I think he could have done it. But Jim always had his heart set on exploring the unexplored. Going where no one has ever been. Fame by itself had been done to death and it bored him much to my relief. I don't think life as a famous singer would have done him any favors. Anyway, I'm rambling sorry.
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 08:57 pm (UTC)Happy? Negative. However, you could say that I am trying my best Missus Kirk.
[Indeed he was. He was so far removed from everything he had learned.]
I... will play for you sometime, if you wish.
[Spock hesitated for a moment...]
Would you care for a game of chess?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 09:13 pm (UTC)That's more accurate for the human condition. You just try your best. It seems like that's what most of us spend our lives saying to each other anyway.
I think I'd like that. I know Jim would. He likes all kinds of music, Spock, including classical. He had this thing for a certain opera singer when he was a child. I wasn't sure for the longest time if it was her looks or her voice that he liked but I think it was just the production of it all, so grand and almost epic that grabbed his attention. What was her name...
hm?
Do you have a chess game on hand, Spock?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 09:31 pm (UTC)I do not... but I am certain that we can order one from the replicator.
[Spock wondered what kind of game Winona would offer him.
He had a passing thought of Jim being a professional singer...
...it was quite an alluring image.]
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 09:37 pm (UTC)[Fantasize to your heart's content, Spock. Maybe some day the Enterprise will encounter an alternate universe where Jim is a singer and you can sweep him off his platinum record making feet. But until then the replicator is very willing to provide you with a chess board and your mother-in-law will play rather like a seasoned veteran. She isn't as good as Jim or rather she isn't as unpredictable as him. She is well versed in the major playing arcs of the game so be prepared for a wide range of games, Spock. Be grateful because you might be playing her for a while.
She plays like her own personality. Very defensive but allowing only her mediocre pieces to fall into Spock's possession. No bishops or knights are sacrificed until well into the game. Her queen is barely used and even then it's only when she can land a check on Spock.]
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 10:57 pm (UTC)After checking Winona Spock regarded her for a moment...]
Perhaps you should sleep now... you are fatigued.
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 11:01 pm (UTC)[She enjoyed herself. Spock was a clever man and she had fun for the first time in a very long time... she merely nodded as she moved her rook]
After this game. Don't think you're going to talk me out of this checkmate.
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 11:09 pm (UTC)Very well... I believe the phrase is 'do your worst'.
[A small amount of Vulcan humour.
It was a hard battle... but he had to hand it to Winona, she knew her chess.
Spock's examines the board as though there was a scientific explanation for why he lost...
....most curious.]
Shall I call for a cot for you Miss Kirk?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 11:17 pm (UTC)[She had to play against her husband and her sons for years. Enough said.]
Yes, please. I think one of us should stay with him tonight. Leonard is here and he's stable. No sense in both of us getting cricked necks. I'm fine with either one so do you want to stay here tonight or go back to the house?
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 11:20 pm (UTC)I wish to stay. However, I do not require sleep.
If you desire to remain in Jim's room... then I can meditate in the waiting room.
[There's something...
....well.... Spock can't really put words to it. But he doesn't want to go very far away from Jim right now.]
no subject
Date: 2013-08-07 11:25 pm (UTC)Alright then. I'm heading home to sleep in an actual bed. I'll be back in the morning. Thanks for the game... I had fun.
[She smiled tiredly and exited the room. There was silence save for the sound of Jim's breathing and the machines he was attached to.]
