It was so sudden. He woke up with a flash, bright lights, soft sounds, a bed, he was alive?? But he'd died in the chamber...in engineering. Spock and he had exchanged that vulcan hand-thing whatever the hell it was. He'd died, he was dead. Was this heaven? Holy....

No. Bones was here nagging at him.

"Oh don't be so melodramatic, you were barely dead. You've been out cold for two weeks."

He was so...taken aback. What had happened? He just remembered being in the locked chamber watching Spock shed tears, glimmering tears of anguish as he slowly died of radiation poisoning... his heart lurched at the memory. He didn't know the vulcan was even capable...

And then Spock was in the room, approaching him. Suddenly... everything else was forgotten. Hell even Bones was gone in his mind, though he could hear the doctor put in a "You know Uhura and I had something to do with it too."

"....Thanks, Spock... for saving my life..."

<sub>[Jim had a rope in his hand that he was tying around the horse's neck and behind his front legs, a difficult feat while on its back but this was the only way to avoid getting a kick to the head. Once the stallion was harnessed, he hopped off, pulling it from the barn, outside and into a circular fenced area.

He locked the gate and got to work with the animal. He'd tug, shifting quickly around to encourage the horse to lay down. At first it kicked and whinnied in response to being tugged. It was very proud and not at all willing to comply. Jim kept at it, simply pulling from another angle as he tried to coax the horse physically to lay.]</sub>

[Spock quirked an eyebrow...
It was a rather curious process that Jim was implementing, and the Vulcan didn't know what to think about it. Regardless, he remained silent as Jim coaxed the proud horse that was not unlike Jim himself.

The Vulcan recalled how Doctor McCoy compared Jim to a prized Stallion... Part of him was confused at the comparison, however, he could see some similarities.]

<sub>[And as he was told later... Spock said something to the effect of breaking said stallion so he could reach his potential. Not that he could be broken by anyone but take a look anyway, Spock. Just take an educational glance.

Jim worked with the horse, read its moods, approached when it was calm, darted back when it was about to buck. In time, it would calm, the horse would crouch to the ground to lay on its side. It'd jump right up again but a bit more work from Jim would get him to lay down calmly.

The captain approached the animal, crouching at its head. He pet it gently and the beast breathed heavily, as if anxious... afraid. Jim was simply gentle, soothingly petting his face, on down his neck. The horse's hooves clacked together as it shifted his legs... perhaps about to jump upright again, surely he'd hit Jim if he did so now.]</sub>

It's alright... s'alright. shh-shh-shh.... I'm not gonna hurt you...

[The Vulcan was utterly amazed...
The wild creature succumbed to Jim's hand. Fascinating.

A curious sensation spread through his chest, and Spock's eyebrows twitched in concern.
However, when he realized what it was, a green blush graced his cheeks. Indeed, to see Jim in this element was reminding him of how much he loved his Ashaya. Not that he needed a reminder...

...but still. Jim was powerful in so many ways, and this was so entirely different and yet not different at all in how he handled every day issues.
This was more raw than anything else. The way Jim approached the horse... it was truly amazing.]

<sub>[Jim was still oblivious to the vulcan. He pet the horse, moving his hands on down his body, petting softly. The horse flapped its tail but didn't move from the ground. It finally trusted Jim after his efforts to break him down as peacefully as possible. The sun was high in the sky and Jim had been out here for hours. Yet he didn't look tired, in fact he looked relaxed. He was smiling calmly, his face warm with joy and true peace. This was a passion of his.

Jim eventually rose from the horse and turned to exit the pen, simply climbing the fence. It was then he noticed his audience.]</sub>

Oh hey Spock... how long have you been there?

Approximately one hour and fifteen point three minutes.
I explored the area before I located you.
[Spock regarded Jim with a soft expression and stepped closer to him, wanting to be apart of that sunlight that Jim was exuding.]

You are quite proficient at handling horses Jim... I was not aware that you had such a talent.

[Who was he kidding? Jim was absolutely beautiful out here... more so than usual...
The Vulcan started working out the statistics of engaging in any form of physical intimacy either here or in the barn.
Spock's mind practically stuttered... what was he doing? This was not logical and very improper. Nevertheless, a small, subtle blush crossed Spock's features.]

<sub>[Jim would surprise Spock by having to turn down that offer of intimacy right now. If it were voiced. He was in the middle of breaking this boy and he had to stay with him through the whole process. At least until the end of the day, three days was his record for taming horses and that was kind of unheard of for wild ones.

Yeah? I grew up doing this. Did you see the farm? What did you think?

I haven't even seen the dogs yet myself...

_{[The horse in the pen got up, began snorting and kicking. The new presence was making it nervous. It whinnied a bit and Jim jumped right back into the pen, approaching slowly]}

no no no... shhh... it's okay... it's okay. _{[He slowly pet the animal on the side of his face, calming him again. Jim pet him while he continued in a smooth voice.]}

He's a friend of mine, he's nice. It's alright, don't get scared, I'm right here.

I was able to see parts of it... It is very green.
[So sayeth the desert dweller.
Spock did not move from his place...]

Should I leave? It would seem that my presence is agitating the horse.

[Spock didn't want Jim to be hurt because of his simple curiosity.]

_{[he pointed to the barn, a series of saddles were hung in a line inside the door.]}

Can you bring me one of those? I need to get him used to one.

Speaking of......I should name his guy.

[Spock inclines his head and does as asked, picking out one of the saddles and carrying it back to Jim.]

Did you have any preference regarding a name?

[Names were important... they were a marker of who you were.]

_{[he fastened the saddle over the horse, but didn't get on it. He'd have the animal run around the pen with the thing on, just to get used to wearing it.]}

A strong animal deserves a strong name...

[Spock finds that he's actually enjoying this interaction. He's always enjoyed animals, but there was something about this situation that was rather agreeable.
He's certain that whatever name Jim chooses will be worthy of such a extraordinary creature.]

...and unless you are asking me for a Vulcan name, you should be the one to name him.

_{[He thought while tugging the animal along, still having him harnessed as he ran a circle in the pen.]}

White Lightening? Curious... Terrans had an interesting way of naming their animals.
No matter... it seemed oddly...fitting somehow. Then again, there was no such thing as 'white lightning'... Though by definition is was both fictional, and non-fictional.
Rather akin to something unexpected.]

That is a rather curious name Ashaya.

_{[Isn't... all lightning white? And the drink certainly exists so there. Jim was busy calling the horse by his name while running it around the pen.]}

[And the drink is just as wild as the both of them.

Spock tilts his head in curiosity.]
Is there any naming ceremony that I should be made aware of? This is an area in which I am not familiar.

[Again, Spock is reminded of how aesthetically pleasing Jim is out here on the farm. It's a piece of information that the Vulcan files away for future reference...
...as this is something that might have to be addressed at some point. It is quite obvious that these activities make Jim very happy.]

[Happy might be overstating it. Handling the farm made him peaceful... But Spock was still correct. He enjoyed his stallions.]

Nope. Only if it's a race horse and this guy's wild and too old for that. We just use his name so he'll get used to it.

[Winona approached the pen carrying a worn pair of cowboy boots.]

I thought you'd need these. Better them than ruining your good space boots.

Ah... Aren't they fine? I mean one is as good as the other right?

Mnn Mmm. Your father almost broke his foot that way. These are made better, they can take more of a beating.

[she tossed Jim his old farm boots]

Besides your half dressed as a cowboy anyway. Might as well complete the look.

Thanks... [Jim quickly pulled the cowboy boots on, up almost to his knee.]

[Spock kept his features calm... but he regarded Winona with curiosity and no small amount of surprise.
He was familiar with the human method of asking for one thing and indeed doing something else entirely... was this one of those times?

Regardless, Spock inclined his head.]

I will assist you Missus Kirk.

[Spock looked at Jim, trying to convey a question, but not quite sure what...
Why was this apprehension building in his mind? Most curious.]

_{[She winked at her son, Jim nodded to them, smiling.]}

Alright, don't burn the house down. And play nice.

_{[He gave his attention to Lightning again and Winona smiled as she headed back to the house.]}

Jim's a genius with those animals. Frank brought one home when he was a teenager, angriest thing I'd ever seen it wouldn't let you get near him without bucking and kicking. Frank said he was useless, just impossible. Jim tamed him in three days. Can you believe that?

From what I have seen of Jim's capabilities today, I can indeed believe that. He is quite remarkable.

[Spock follows along beside Winona.]

He appears quite... content with these animals.
[It wasn't a question... merely a remark...
But Spock was still wondering why.]

Animals make him happy, Spock. Jim has a lot of love in his heart and they respond to that. And I know now that they soothed him throughout his life. They don't judge, belittle, or degrade. They only return what they're given.

_{[Once in the house, she heads to the kitchen. The place has been cleaned thoroughly, it almost doesn't look like the same house. And Winona is walking with a bit of pep. She seems new too, had someone flipped a light switch? Her only indication of being in a rough spot was that her eyes were slightly red and puffy.]}

[Spock thought about what Winona had said...
Jim does indeed have a lot of love to offer, in his own unique way. ]
I believe I understand what you mean.

[Spock followed Winona into the house and looked around. It was indeed as if he had stepped into a new house, with an entirely different woman. But, logic dictated that this was the same house, and Winona had had a chance to clean up.
There didn't seem to be any alcohol around that he could see.

Spock stepped into the kitchen.]

Oh I hope it won't offend you if I make something with meat in it. I plan on making one of Jim's favorites for dinner. He's going to be starved when he gets done with that horse.

_{[She washed her hands, then rubbed her eye. Was she crying still? Was that a huff or a sniffle?]}

Jim. You may assist me with Jim, Spock. _{[She gets some vegetables, washing them off. They weren't from the replicator. Straight from the farm~]}

[Spock was about to tell her that it was unnecessary to make him anything specific, he was a guest after all.
But her last statement caused him to pause...


The Vulcan's head tilts in confusion.]
You will need to be more specific.


[The Vulcan was at a loss here... what did she mean exactly?]

_{[She looked at him, pointing to her puffy eyes, now clearly evident that she had been crying.]}

I want to... to thank you for what you said to me this morning. I am glad... very glad for it. I understand now what kind of danger Jim is marrying into.

If you don't get it together, Spock, this is going to be my son in the future. Even if he doesn't show it like I do.
