It was so sudden. He woke up with a flash, bright lights, soft sounds, a bed, he was alive?? But he'd died in the chamber...in engineering. Spock and he had exchanged that vulcan hand-thing whatever the hell it was. He'd died, he was dead. Was this heaven? Holy....

No. Bones was here nagging at him.

"Oh don't be so melodramatic, you were barely dead. You've been out cold for two weeks."

He was so...taken aback. What had happened? He just remembered being in the locked chamber watching Spock shed tears, glimmering tears of anguish as he slowly died of radiation poisoning... his heart lurched at the memory. He didn't know the vulcan was even capable...

And then Spock was in the room, approaching him. Suddenly... everything else was forgotten. Hell even Bones was gone in his mind, though he could hear the doctor put in a "You know Uhura and I had something to do with it too."

"....Thanks, Spock... for saving my life..."

It's amazing how tactile he's allowed himself to become since finding his love with Jim. He wondered briefly about his parents....
... Did his father ever touch his mother like this? Part of him hoped he did, because no one in love should go without this. Then again... perhaps it was thin hope... it was Sarek after all.
Or maybe he was the typical child that was creeped out at thinking about his parents like that...


But how did he get here? How did he let a human get past all his defenses? Then again... against his T'hy'la, there were no walls. Spock did wonder if he was upholding his race's practices and principles...

....it's been such an emotional rollercoaster for the past two weeks, he's hardly felt like a Vulcan at all. But... he does feel like a man in love. And that's definitely something.]

He thinks Spock is a fine vulcan. He is a vulcan therefore whatever he does is vulcan by definition. Forget what they think, they only took him in conditionally, with the understanding that it was a pity invite to their elitist club. They weren't exactly the vulcans Jim would like to see emulated. Spock was much more his style. Empathetic yet reserved. Patient yet decisive. Withdrawn and yet involved in every detail of his work... Jim loved Spock not just for who he was but for what he did...

Just as Jim wishes he could fix Spock's uneasiness, Spock wishes he could heal Jim's dreams... but like everything, it takes time. But certainly Spock is a lot less uneasy since meeting Jim....

They spent the day in that bed talking, making out, sleeping... Jim upheld his promise and didn't leave his room for two days. When the morning came though, Jim was gone from the bed. Winona was out on Starfleet business... and something was cooking downstairs. Something plomeek scented.]</sub>

[Spock had spent those days with Jim.... and he has to admit, it was quite relaxing. Perhaps the most relaxing time he's had since...

...well. It's been awhile.

Spock had been meditating, but had fallen asleep in the early morning. He awoke now to the smell of....
The Vulcan was wide awake in an instant, his arm going out to check if Jim was there. Of course he wasn't... he was cooking.
Filling with fond exasperation, Spock gets dressed and heads downstairs...and into the kitchen.]

Good morning T'hy'la... may I inquire as to what you are making? [Nevermind what he's doing out of bed...]

<sub>[Jim was cleared to be out of bed! Bones said two days and from then on he had a month of no heavy lifting. He's not breaking any rules! Besides he dares you to make him stay a day longer in that bed without any exercise. He's already missed his morning run for a good month now. He's DYING to move around.

But Jim is beaming with satisfaction. He looked to Spock with a grin. There was a pot of telltale soup before him, steaming.]</sub>

I did it, Spock! It's perfect... c'mere. Taste this.

[Spock looked slightly amused as he walked forward, inspecting the pot of...

....well, perfect Plomeek soup.
The Vulcan picked up a spoon, and dipped it into the creamy texture. Lifting it to his lips, he gave a cursory blow to cool it down, then put it in his mouth.
Instantly the flavour exploded in his mouth, causing the Vulcan to close his eyes in pleasure. If he was any more human, he would have been raving at how good it was...

....but he was Vulcan. As it was, he turned to Jim with a small smile on his face.]

You are correct. It is indeed perfect. Just as my mother made it.

_{[Jim was beaming with pride. He knew he had made this soup the best it would ever be. How crazy that it was an earth ingredient that made it!]}

It is? Good thing I figured it out now before I'm too scatterbrained to cook.

Help yourself. I made it for you... It's no wonder I never figured it out before, your mom used an ingredient from earth. It just needed ginger.

_{[He shrugged]} Breakfast?

[Spock paused, spoon half-way to his mouth...]

Ginger? I was completely unaware....

.....fascinating.

[The spoon continued its journey, and Spock could feel his toes curl. It was so good!
A small, pleased noise escaped the Vulcan before he dipped spoon again.... and again..

...who needed bowls anyways? He's got a perfectly good pot right here.]

<sub>[Jim ladles some out for himself as he watches Spock amusedly. At least he knew Spock actually loved the soup. He'd worked his mind over it for so long trying to figure out what it was missing. It was only in imagining having a hybrid child himself that he nearly palmed himself in the face for not thinking of an earth ingredient. Ginger was so obvious once that particular wall had been cleared.

Jim stood by Spock, waiting for him to finish.]</sub>

You can eat off the rest. I made a lot so it should last you a while... Ah. We do need to talk though. When you're finished.

[Spock looked at Jim... and seemed to remember himself and blushed slightly in embarrassment.
Keeping his composure though, he obtained a bowl and ladled some soup for himself, and joined Jim at the table.]

Of course Ashaya... May I inquire as to the whereabouts of your mother?

_{[He sat with Spock, sipping from his bowl casually.]}

Starfleet needs her at the base here. She said she'd be home later to night... and I asked her something this morning and she said alright, so I have to ask you now...

[Spock put down his spoon, giving Jim his full attention...]

Uhm... well we talked about it and your dad said this could take a long time for me to adjust when we bond. And we've had a couple of setbacks but the clock is still ticking. We won't have this window again...

I was wondering if you'd be terribly put out to do that today.

_{[He smirked as if he could hardly dream of Spock saying no.]}

[Spock blinked, and for a moment he looked pained...]

Ashaya, are you certain? You are in a less than satisfactory physical condition, and this stage in the bonding process will not be easy. Are you certain you do not wish to wait?

[Of course Spock would never tell Jim 'no' if he asked... but still.... Spock wouldn't be Spock without his logical self popping up now and again.]

I'm more than certain, Spock. I've put us behind enough. I want to be as functional as I can when Enterprise re-launches... this isn't just about us, it's about our crew too. They need me coherent...

Very well. I am certain my father will be pleased... in his own way.

[The Vulcan stands, and grabs the portable comm device and brings it back to the table. Sitting, he holds out his hand for Jim to take... his eyes going warm.]

I am looking forward to becoming one with you Ashaya.

_{[He smiled right back, blue eyes warming geniunely.]}

_{[Once put through, their call would reach the Embassy, then Sarek's secretary, and then Sarek himself.]}

[Spock seems to straighten even more at his father's presence.]

Greetings father. I trust you are well?

[Spock looks over at Jim... then back to his father on the screen.]

We have news.

_{[Jim smiles and makes no attempt to sit up straighter. He's perfectly comfortable slumped against the chair. Sarek raises his eyebrows as if to suggest Spock just follow that sentence with whatever the news was rather than wait for him to request it like humans normally do. It was entirely illogical. You initiated this call, you say it.]}

[If Spock were any less Vulcan, he would have made Sarek guess...

We have started the bonding process, and we wanted to tell you. We were also wondering if you have any further advice to give us.

[Spock was kind of hoping that there wouldn't be any ceremony required. Most of his clan was dead now... surely they would have to stand on formality....]

_{[Sarek seems to pause, almost as if he had to think about that one. Was there... something emotional happening? He felt a bit sad... and joyous... and lonely... and proud.]}

I am pleased to hear that... I had considered it previously. You'll be pleased to know that your grandmother finds it in your best interest that you bond yourselves without a formal ceremony. I objected to the idea but... she was adamant.

... I will advise that you be patient with him, Spock. And for Jim... do not try to push yourself. You will feel helpless but you will gradually recover. Rushing this impatiently will only tarnish the final bond.

Spock... you must be poised to tend to him. He will feel helpless because he will be. His needs will be known to you and not others... using that to help Jim... will help strengthen the bond and keep it thriving in its young stage...
